Brief: We proposed a modular-based branding concept for the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) under the theme “some people,” which reflects the breadth of human experience. SIFA 2023 centres on individuals coming together for various reasons, forming a collective protagonist. The project was developed as part of a pitch for the festival.
This project was done in collaboration with Amy Ong, another lead designer at APT811.
We adopted a justified, type-focused approach to illustrate both the common threads and differences in our shared humanity. By creating deliberate gaps between phrases, we highlighted variations in individual experiences. These typographic silhouettes were then layered, producing modular forms that symbolise our limited capacity to relate yet persistent drive for connection.
For SIFA X, which takes place in unconventional settings that merge party and performance, I transformed the core RGB colours into freeform gradients. This allowed the hues to mix without fixed boundaries, echoing the programme’s boundary-pushing essence. Continuing the type-based direction, I built both the key “X” visual and secondary elements using the letter “x” from the main typeface, designing the focal “X” to resemble a burst of light, representing the energy of SIFA X.
To set LIFE PROFUSION apart from other SIFA offerings, I used 3D rendering techniques. Drawing on skills gained during the Singapore Art Week pitch, I modelled a DNA structure and applied a glitch effect to highlight its virtual nature. Each DNA block was colour-coded to match LIFE PROFUSION’s various content portals, reflecting how these parts build on one another to deepen our collective understanding.
